Seriously, don’t @!*? them off.
I am talking about Google. If you are wanting to earn your money from a website (or several websites) then the last thing you want to do it P*SS Google off. They are the Judge, Jury and Executioner whether we like it or not.
This is fine though, because if we do things properly then we have nothing to worry about. Google will trust our website and they will rank our content in their search results. We will then attract visitors to our website. But in order to do this we need to understand what Google is and what it wants to achieve.
Google search is simple. People type in a question and Google presents a list of web pages it thinks provides the best answer to this question. Both Google and the person asking the question want these web pages to be as relevant and useful as possible. If they are not then Google has not provided a good service and people will look elsewhere for their answers (i.e. other search engines).
So, how does Google ensure the best search results? Probably more than 90% of the content on the internet is rubbish and spammy. There are websites that use dodgy tactics to try and fool Google into thinking their content is best so they rank highly and attract lots of visitors. How does Google spot this rubbish and ignore it?
Google has a complex and great algorithm that takes into account many factors in order to judge whether the content is relevant for the persons search. It includes things like keywords, content structure, images, headings, URLs, website age, website authority, internal website links, external website links, incoming website links, how long people spend on your website, and many more factors.
For us, the website owners there are things we should do and things we should not do. Ultimately the single most important thing for us to do is create good quality and relevant content. Do this and we will do OK.
